Loughborough police issue quarry swim warning

-

HOT and sunny weather has prompted some people to use a Leicestershire quarry as a swimming pool - prompting a warning by police.

Posting on its Facebook feed, Loughborough Police have warned of the dangers of taking part in the activity - and that the swimmers are also breaking the law.

A spokesperson said: “It seems the quarry near Loughborough has become a popular spot for swimming and cliff div- ing during this heatwave.”

Although the water may look a lovely colour and inviting in this heat, they warned that:

• You don’t know how deep the water is or what is underneath;

• There may be submerged rubbish and sharp objects;

• You could get caught up in underwater plants;

• There could be dead ani- mals or excrement in the water;

• The water is very likely to be heavily polluted;

• There may be dangerous algae;

• There is a risk of landslides, falling rocks and sheer drops;

• Access for emergency services is very limited;

• Risk of hypothermia, despite the weather - water deeper than a few inches will be cold enough to cause cold water shock; • You are trespassing! The spokesperson added: “We will be conducting increased patrols in the area and making a note of cars parked up near the quarry.

“We are not looking to spoil anyone’s fun, we just want people to know the risks and keep you all safe. Please share this and help spread the dangers.”
