Sileby shots from 1934 and 1966

-

CHRIS Freer has sent in two super photos for Looking Back readers.

Chris has sent in a batch of brilliant pictures for us to share. Expect many more over the coming months

The picture to the right dates back to the 1930s and Chris says: “My mother, Margaret Freer (nee Taylor), believes it was taken on the day of the annual Sileby Parade in 1934.

“It shows her father, grandfather and uncle with some of their village pals.

“The location was the rear of the Plough public house, which used to trade on the High Street. The building - and the wooden pub sign gantry - is still there.

“Although all of the people in the picture are long gone, they were members of established Sileby families, and so should be of interest to readers.

The ones we can identify (and those we can’t!) are: Back row: (from left): Fred Taylor, Joe Allsop, unknown, Alf Hetterley, Albert Taylor, unknown, Albert Bott, Freddy Taylor, Stan Widdowson.

Front Row: (from left): Alf Lewin, unknown, Fred Taylor Snr.”

The second photo Chris has sent is of the Sileby Bowling Club, taken in 1966.

He said: “The only person on the photograph we can identify is Herbert Haseldine (front row, extreme left) whose son Roy ran a sweet shop on King Street, Sileby, during the 1960s. I can testify to that as I used to get my bubble gum cards from there on my way to school!

“Hopefully your readers can add a few more names to the faces.”

Chris said: “If any family members - particularly the Haseldines - would like a copy of this photograph, please contact me on chris.freer@ntlworld.com” Can you name anyone else on the photos? Please call Andy Rush at Looking Back on 01509 7635802. E-mail andy.rush@reachplc.com
