A massive birthday bash for Splendour music fest

- DAVID GODSALL david.godsall@reachplc.com

PERFECT weather, great bands and plenty of entertainment - this year’s Splendour certainly celebrated its 10th birthday in style!

The 20,000-strong crowd at this year’s Splendour festival at Wollaton Hall had plenty to smile about, with a packed line-up across three music stages for the festival’s 10th birthday.

And there was certainly something for everyone, with some big name acts performing on the Main Stage and Confetti Stage, along with rising talent at the Acoustic Rooms, laughs galore at the Funhouse Comedy stage, and fringe entertainment on the Fringe Stage.

The Confetti stage featured some great performances from the likes of Toploader, who got the crowd going wild to their massive chart hit Dancing in the Moonlight, while Embrace had a very impressive set which the fans loved.

Headliner Paloma Faith - also celebrating her birthday - was touched to be serenaded by her band and the audience during her set. Kicking off her silver platform shoes to better dance, she got the crowd going with hits such as Picking Up The Pieces, Changing and Crybaby from her number one album The Architect finishing off with a breathtaking performance of Only Love Can Hurt Like This - and one thing I can say, she does like to chat!

The Charlatans delivered an epic while Marc Almond impressed, belting out torch song after torch song topped off by leading a mass singalong to the Soft Cell classic Tainted Love, one of my all-time favourites, along with Say Hello Wave Goodbye.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor, resplendent in silver sequins, really got the main stage crowd in party mood and even got the crowd jumping.

And you cannot go wrong with a bit of Abba, as Björn Again were the perfect fit for a crowd ready for a bit of Mamma Mia and Super Trouper - and even surprised with a bit of a rap mix!

Over on the Acoustic Rooms stage in the courtyard, Nottingham singer Rob Green saved the day stepping in to play the headline set after To Kill a King had to pull out due to an injury to one of their band. Having turned up expecting to sit back and watch fellow performer Nina Smith play the main stage for the first time, Rob stepped up to the plate and after a quick trip home to pick up his guitar and loop pedal, he joined the 10th party lineup .

Away from the music, there was so much to enjoy with fairground rides, Little Splendours area, entertainers wandering around keeping the crowd happy, loads of food and drinks to choose from, and stalls galore.

All in all, a splendid day out - and one of the biggest birthday parties I have ever attended!
