Young mud runners take trophy

Michael Smith Trust Challenge event

- BY STEPH CLIFTON AND JILLIE HEALEY (VICE CAPTAINS)

YOU may remember reading the Echo article published back in April which introduced you to The Michael Smith Trust Challenge Team (MST) and what our plans were for Zeus.

Well, the day finally came and June 30 saw almost 90 people descend on Ashby Moto Park, but it wasn’t for the usual fourwheeled event; it was the MST at Zeus races!

The 88 strong team, made up of both adults and children, ran the 7km obstacle mud run course.

This “Tough Mudder” style event saw runners wading through swamps, swinging across the monkey bars, climbing through the trees and sliding across the finish line. As expected, there was an amazing family atmosphere at the race, with runners as young as six taking on the challenge!

We also organised set challenges within our wave and were offering a trophy to the first MST member across the finish line and one for the best teamwork. Who doesn’t love a bit of friendly competition?

The first runner back was Ed Allen who completed the course in an amazing 50 minutes! Well done Ed!

As for the best teamwork, this was awarded to the Loughborough Emmanuel Football Club.

This team of young football players took on the course together and were voted as the winners by the marshalls at the event, who commented that it was the best teamwork they had seen and that the lads are a credit to their parents.

It was fantastic to hear such positive comments about these young boys, who will hopefully become the MST stars of the future. We aren’t entirely sure how they plan to share the trophy but hopefully their teamwork will shine through once again!

A lot of the team this time round were new to this type of event and the feedback from them has been very positive…….

One person said: “My son had been asking to do an OCR [Obstacle Course Race] with me for a while. When I was told about the MST and the family wave they had a Zeus I knew it was the race for us.

“It was well organised, a great course and MST made us a welcome part of the team. It was an awesome day.”

Another added: “We had our first ever visit to Zeus. We took three adults and six kids. What a fantastic time we had, everyone made us feel very welcome and went out of their way to make the day as much fun as possible.

“We all finished together with big smiles on our faces, sliding into a pool of muddy water. We all received a medal for finishing and, as you can imagine, for the two six-year-olds that just topped off the day.

“We will be returning in the near future to have another go. Thank you to all at Zeus, and a big thank you to the MST for the invite.”

Though this event itself didn’t raise any money for the charities which the team support (The Trust and LOROS) it has the set wheels in motion for future plans so watch this space!
