Community event for Syrian refugee families
A COMMUNITY event was held at the Shajalal Centre and Mosque, Loughborough, for Syrian families who have arrived into Charnwood through the Home Office Resettlement scheme.
This was jointly organised by Leicestershire County Council Adult Learning Services, The Haven Project and Emma Moonlight from Charnwood Borough Council. The main objective was to allow the Syrian families to meet up centrally from around the Leicestershire county, for them to exchange contacts with each other, avoid isolation and to support integration into the wider community.
The day was packed with fun and activities for the children and parents alike including lunch donated by Cinnamon restaurant, Loughborough.
Speakers were Imam Bashir Ahmed from the mosque, Paul Fleming and Ruby Chowdhury, managers from Leicestershire County Council Adult Learning services and Omar Farooq from the Haven Project Loughborough. Ruby Chowdhury and Paul Fleming, welcomed the Syrian families and mentioned that they understood and appreciat- ed the difficulties moving into a new country and re-starting their lives all over again.
They also added that they should not feel alone and that Leicestershire Adult Learning services are here to support them not only with their English language learning but have other services to help them integrate into the wider community with confidence.
