MP joins National Citizen Service young people at town project
LOUGHBOROUGH MP Nicky Morgan joined a group of local young people taking part in National Citizen Service (NCS).
NCS is a government initiative that provides young people aged 15-17 the chance to take on new challenges, experience exciting activities, make longlasting friendships and develop vital skills that will support them later in life.
It was launched to tackle three core issues of importance to society: social cohesion, social mobility and social engagement. During her visit, Mrs Morgan met NCS participants in their fourth week of the programme where the team of young people have planned and are creating a sensory garden for the people supported by Mencap in Loughborough.
Mrs Morgan said: “National Citizen Service is an inspirational scheme which benefits communities and the thousands of young people who take part in it.
“NCS contributes greatly in building character and developing social responsibility in our young people; who freely give of their time and effort to improve so many worthy causes.
“I’m delighted to meet up with this group of fabulous volunteers who are putting so much effort into creating this sensory garden, I’m sure many people will get a great deal of pleasure from their hard work.”
Mencap volunteer services co-ordinator, Jen Stoneman, said: “It was a pleasure to have Nicky Morgan MP come along to see the amazing work that the young people from the NCS have done over the past few weeks.
“NCS have not only helped create a beautiful garden, which will be enjoyed over many summers to come, but have been fantastic at working alongside the people we support.
“This is one of the first projects we’ve done in collaboration with NCS and is part of our wider collaborative work across Mencap Loughborough and beyond.”
