Warwick Castle’s Dragon Slayer show is stunning

HEROES, villains, damsels in distress, and giant winged creatures.

It is fair to say that Dragon Slayer, the explosive new evening show at Warwick Castle, really does have it all.

And I can honestly say, it takes a lot to amaze me – but this show really did hit me for six

Showcasing the epic journey of Guy of Warwick as he battles beasts to win the heart of Princess Felice, the Earl of Warwick’s daughter, Dragon Slayer is the first night-time spectacular created exclusively by the castle.

To get us in the mood for a show, we began by enjoying a hog roast and a drink in the gardens before moving through to the open show area outside the castle, where the entertainment begins.

Here you could watch the birds of prey fly over your head and swoop down to land, before the main event began, with the sizeable crowd on the opening night all heading down to the jousting arena.

Building upon Warwick Castle’s reputation for bringing history to life through spectacular shows, Dragon Slayer resurrects the tale of the 10th century warrior Guy.

The arena featured a fire eater to ‘warm up’ the crowd, then the story began.

Here the tale of Guy was played out, as he took on opponents in jousts and in battle to prove to the princess that he was worthy of her love.

There was stunts galore, fire jousts, sword battles and even explosions, as we saw Guy on his journey. The action came thick and fast, and it was truly thrilling to see the story unfold with this live performance. The spectacular Dragon Slayer show at Warwick Castle. And once the jousting was complete, a new enemy came onto the horizon – and it was time for the crowd to retreat into the castle grounds to the Central Courtyard where Guy of Warwick was to face his final and most challenging battle.

And this is where the show really proved an amazing sight – as the final battle comes to life through a projection and light show onto the castle’s walls, which really does have to be seen to be believed.

It really looks as though the castle comes to life with the epic battle of man versus dragon, featuring real flames and dazzling pyrotechnics as Guy battles to save the castle folk from the giant beast.

And after the thrilling climax, we get to find out if Guy and the princess find the love they were searching for....

It really was a stunning show, which left many children in awe of what they had just seen - including bigger kids like me!

And if you really want to make a weekend of it, why not stay close the castle in a lodge or glamping tent?

Situated alongside the beautiful River Avon in a tranquil setting, the lodges and glamping tents are literally fit for a King – or Queen, prince or princess for that matter – and have everything you need for a great short break with the family or as a couple.

There are toilets and showers on site, and breakfast is served in a grand hall close to the accommodation, with a hearty feast to set you up for the day.

You even have a separate entrance for staying guests which lets you straight into the castle grounds.

And as part of the accommodation package, you get entrance to the castle included, where there is loads to see and do.

You can embark on the towers and battle- ments walk – which features 530 steps but offers outstanding views from up high – or head down into the depths to see where the gaol and its prisoners used to be.

You can wander around the Great Hall, State Rooms and Chapel, learning all about the fascinating facts from the castle’s past, and even head to the Castle Dungeon for an exciting walkthrough with live actors.

There are birds of prey displays, the chance to see the giant trebuchet in action, explore the Peacock Gardens, get lost in time in the Horrible Histories Maze – there is plenty to see and do for all ages.

Warwick Castle has plenty to offer day visitors or those wanting a short break with a difference – and the new Dragon Slayer show proves that there is always another reason to come back for a visit, even if you have been before.

Dragon Slayer premiered on Friday, August 3, and there are a total of eight performances scheduled throughout summer.
