Flytipping warning issued by district council team

MOTORISTS travelling through North West Leicestershire witnessed the damaging and costly effects of fly-tipping when a large pile of white good, spare tyres and general rubbish was created at a service station in the district.

Officers from North West Leicestershire District Council were at Donington Park Services to send out a strong message that fly-tipping will not be tolerated in the district.

With the support of Donington Services, a mock fly tip including fridges, a mattress and tyres was set up at the site. Officers chatted with drivers about the damage fly tips can cause to the environment and the costs of clearing them up. Advice was also given on how to correctly dispose of waste.

The council’s specialist CCTV van and trail cameras were also on show to remind people of the tools at the council’s disposal to catch fly-tippers.

The event was held in support of the national Highways England campaign to reduce fly-tipping around the country.

North West Leicestershire has good transport links, with many major roads passing through the district. This can make it easy for fly-tippers to travel into the district to dump their waste illegally, something the council wants to reduce.

The district has cleared 294 fly-tips since April 1, 2018. In 2017/18, a total of 733 fly-tips were removed.

Coun Alison Smith, deputy leader and portfolio holder for community services, said: “Fly-tipping is a welldocumented issue that is a problem across the country and North West Leicestershire is no exception to this.

“We currently invest time and resources into clearing fly-tips in the district, but we feel it is important we also talk to people and help them to make the right choices when it comes to disposing of their waste.

“Thanks to Donington Services for their support – we’ve been able to get our messages across to lots of motorists, and the responses we’ve had have been overwhelmingly positive. I have no doubt that this will have a positive effect in our district and beyond.”
