Woodpeckers and Shepshed North claim final victories while Taylor lifts singles title
THIS week was Finals week for the Loughborough Bowls League with the Monday League Trophy contested by Thringstone Woodpeckers and Wymeswold Wolds in a game played at East Leake.
At the half way break Woodpeckers held a healthy lead with all three rinks comfortably ahead, but after the tea break, and a further break due to heavy rain, the Wolds rink skipped by Norman Booty fought back to win 18-15, unfortunately for Wolds the Woodpeckers rinks skipped by Joe Breward and David Bass had comfortable wins 29-7 and 21-14 respectively to give victory to “the Woodies” 65-39 (6-2).
The Thursday Trophy was played under the floodlights at Thringstone where home side Thringstone Rangers entertained league champions Shepshed North in a game watched by a large crowd on a cold night.
North got off to an excellent start but by the halfway point Rangers had pulled back to leave the game equally balanced two rinks each, but it was North who held fast and went on to win the match three rinks to one and a final score of 74-62 (8-2) to claim a cup and league double.
In a correction to last week’s report. 19-year-old Rees Taylor of Shepshed Bowls Club had an outstanding win in the Bowls Leicestershire Under 25 Open singles competition against Justin Butcher of Holwell Bowls Club in the County Finals at Countesthorpe. This was an excellent win for Rees, collecting his first major trophy and no doubt there will be others in the years ahead.
