THE BLINDERS Bodega, Nottingham
ONE of the most-talked0-about new bands this year are The Blinders. Inspired by the likes of Nick Cave and The Fall, the trio have been championed by 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq as “the fastest emerging UK band at the moment”. The band release their eagerly anticipated new album Columbia on September 21 before a mammoth UK tour.
Who’s in the band?
Thomas Haywood (vox/guitar), Charlie McGough (bass) and Matthew Neale (drums/percussion).
How do you describe your music?
Some sort of anti-establishment, semipsychedelic The Fall-esque soup.
When did you know a life in music was for you?
We all wanted to write and create music, we know that much. We just kind of fell into it, and we have no intentions of climbing out.
How does the songwriting process work for you?
We write music very slowly, over months of reshuffling and arranging our work. However, our lyrics come very quickly often from one piece of writing or poetry.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Reality. Who are you listening to at the moment? The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Father John Misty, Idles, Spiritualized, LCD Soundsystem, The Arctic Monkeys.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you?
We’re in a rehearsal studio three times a week, and play pretty much every weekend. When we’re not doing that, a typical day is whatever you want it to be. Writing is very much done individually so we wouldn’t be able to speak for one another, but we somehow keep on returning to rehearsals with scrapbooks full of lyrics and songs.
How’s life on the road?
Sometimes it can be a pain in the backside, other times it can be bliss. A different place every 24 hours playing for people who have come together to watch you perform your music? It doesn’t really get better than that.
What would you like the audience to take away from your shows?
Whatever they want from it. If by a consequence of our shows they feel inspired, so be it. If they just enjoyed it for what it is, a show, then that’s just as profound to us.
