50 YEARS AGO Bid for own statute of Herbert Schofield

A PLEA was made for a statue of the late Dr Herbert Schofield, to be erected in Loughborou­gh town centre.

Dr E J Richards, vice chancellor of the university, made the appeal saying he was amazed how little Dr Schofield, who died in 1963, meant to many local people. And yet he was the man who began what had now grown into a unique educationa­l complex, ranging from the university to the college school.

Trying to model himself on John Peel

THE Fantasia at the Bull’s Head in Quorn was to be given a diffrent look with two new disc jockeys, Tony Knight and Jimmy James.

Tony worked at the Fantasia previously and was trying to model himself on John Peel and play “undergroun­d music”.

He said: “I would rather have a sit down audience who will appreciate the music I play.

“If people don’t like my sort of music I try to convert them.”

Parking meters idea is dismissed

TALK of parking meters being installed on the streets of Loughborou­gh were ended by the town council, saying they were not appropriat­e.

If meters were to be installed it would have meant the loss 100 present parking spaces and it would be “difficult” for the twice weekly m,market and the November fair.

More than three coins in La Fontana

CUSTOMERS at La Fontana, the restaurant and coffee bar at Baxter Gate, Loughborou­gh were often to be found throwing coins in a fountain just inside the door.

And now the joint owners, Mr Alexander Pastor and Mr Benito Paciolla decided they were going to give the money, which so far totalled about £5, to a local charity.

Father and son knew their onions

MR John Baxter won the cup for most points at Hathern Liberal WMC Horticultu­ral Show and the special prize for six onions.

Twenty five years previously the very same awards had been won by his father, the late Len Baxter.

25 YEARS AGO Green signal for new Barrow station

A PLANNED new rail station in Barrow-upon-Soar, part of the Ivanhoe Line was given the green signal from Charnwood Borough Council.

However the council said that it would recommend that access facilities for disabled and those with prams should be improved.

Ward councillor, Coun Brian Henman, said the people of Barrow were not opposed to the new station, but were concerned that many people would not be able to use it as they would be unable to climb the 56 steps leading to it.

Newsagent John Thompson retires

FOR 22 years newsagent John Thompson had been getting up at 3am for what he described as the “best job in the world.”

But now, he and his wife Sheila, were saying “goodbye” to Thompson’s newsagents in Woodgate, Rothley and “hello” to a more convention­al lifestyle.

John, who altogether spent 30 years in the business, set up on his own in the village in 1971.
