Busy time for WI group

-

VICE PRESIDENT, Sue Young, welcomed everyone, including two new members, to the October meeting of the Thorpe Acre WI held at the Thorpe Acre Church Hall on Tuesday, October 9.

October is proving to be a busy month. As it turns out we’ve not quite reached the semi-finals of the Darts Competition as Kegworth also has 21 points. The play off for a place will be played later this month.

The first match of the Skittles Competition against Walton-le-Wolds was a true nail biter. Each side won two games the other being drawn.

So it was player against player. The atmosphere was tense as the first pair threw, both scoring the same.

Not a sound was heard as the second pair chucked their cheeses down the alley. And so it was due to Sue W. that we won the match by just one skittle!

A wonderful evening was had by all. As our next skittle match also needs to be played by the end of the month, we’re hoping not to get confused and end up throwing cheeses at a dart board!

Three members went to The Federation Centenary Tea held at Barkby Village Hall. This proved to be a very stylish affair.

Each table had tiered cake stands that groaned under delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes and the non-stop flow of tea was served in matching china cups and saucers. The whole experience was enhanced by two harpists who played beautifully throughout the occasion.

All agreed with Janet that this final event of the Federation’s Centenary Year would long be remembered.

A rousing round of applause was given to the members of the Home Economics Committee who had worked so hard in providing such a wonderful afternoon.

Carole gave tickets to those who wished to see the live streamed productions of the ‘King and I’ and the Alan Bennett play ‘Alleluia’.

Another meeting of the Wild, Woolly, Women’s Workshop is scheduled for the end of October.

Relating to all things handmade; as this year’s theme for our entry into the Christmas Tree Festival is ‘ Trees’, Sue Y. asked everyone to bring their Patchwork Christmas Trees, made at last month’s meeting, to the next.

These, along with the ‘bottle top’ designs, will be the main decorations for this year’s tree.

Christmas is definitely coming as the details of the Carol Concert have been finalised and it’s going to be a rerun of last year’s that was cancelled due to the icy conditions. We’re hoping Carole will be making fresh mince pies though! Tickets for our ‘Go Ukulele Crazy’ Extravaganza on December 14th at the Thorpe Acre Church are selling well.

We’ve also made a change to our Christmas meeting. Instead of a party, we’re going to have a themed evening and Sue W. is going to talk about ‘A German Christmas’.

However Sue Y. will still make her delicious punch and the food will be of German origins.

Correspondence from WI House and National was placed at the front of the table for perusal.

Sue drew members’ attention to Kegworth’s upcoming annual Quiz and it seems likely that two teams will be entering this year.

She also informed the members that the committee has decided that, over the next year, County News will be provided to all members free of charge.

Unfortunately our speaker for this month has had to cancel so our multi-talented Sue Y stepped into the breach and compiled a ‘Blue’ themed Quiz.

The questions ranged from easy to bizarre and a lot of fun was had trying to answer them! Where was that Blue Lagoon again?

The winners received a ’naughty but nice’ prize to eat with their tea. Sue was thanked for all her efforts.

The raffle prize was won by Jo S.. Refreshments were provided by Ann S. and Lynne H.. Rosemary won the competition, with Sue W. coming 2nd and Jill P., 3rd.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 13, at 7.30pm at the Thorpe Acre Church Hall.

As this will be our Annual Meeting there will not be a speaker, however, after the close of business there will be a Beetle Drive!

If this generates as much hilarity as it did last year then do come along and join in. You never know you could be the winner of a ’naughty but nice’ prize to eat with your cup of tea.
