Photo Society challenge
SILEBY Photographic Society held its annual 12-Shot Challenge competition at the meeting held on Monday, October 8.
Boards displaying twelve prints each were entered for the competition and it was left to Jim Hartje, ARPS, EFIAP, APAGB, DPAGB, BPE5*, this year’s judge, to award marks for each.
Jim had to take into consideration the photographer’s interpretation and perception of the predetermined twelve subjects, as well as the prints being photographically good, and he based his awarded marks on this criteria having been met.
No modification of the picture is allowed and the use of Photoshop and/or other modern-day computer-aided programmes is prohibited. After analysing each picture in detail and comparing like with like, Jim eventually declared Mike Belson as the winner, with second and third places being awarded to Pam Darby and Jill Johnson-Dorey respectively.
Points-wise, this had been a close competition with all boards evidencing a fair representation and good photography of the pre-determined subjects.
To complete the evening, Jim gave a brief but well informed presentation on ‘How to Improve Your Photography’.
Given by such a well qualified and respected individual within the photographic world, his hints and tips were well worth digesting.
It was fascinating to see the transformation taking place from an average picture to a competition winner after various techniques had been applied.
This only comes, of course, with experience and knowledge acquired over the years but, as the adage goes, practice makes perfect!
Colin Machin, president of the society, thanked Jim for providing an objective view of the prints put before him, and also for sharing his thoughts and knowledge.
The society’s annual week-long exhibition is now in full swing which opened this week on Monday, October 15, at Sileby Community Centre.
The exhibition continues throughout the week with doors opening at 2pm – 9.30pm today, Wednesday, the 17th, and at 7pm – 9.30pm on Thursday and Friday.
The exhibition concludes on Saturday, the 20th opening at 1pm – 6pm.
A large number of exhibits are on display which includes panels from invited societies as well as prints and digital images entered by Sileby’s own members.
The audio-visual theme show this year is entitled ‘’Charnwood – Part 2’. Refreshments are available and members are on hand to talk to anyone interested in the activities of the Society.
