-

THE Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers celebrated the opening of the newly-named Local & Family History Centre in the Granby Street public library.

The library itself had re-opened in early January following refurbishment.

In the area previously known as Local Studies, the newly named centre is aimed at encouraging the general public to use the centre’s resources to research their family histories and to explore the documented history of the local area.

Among the invited guests from Charnwood Borough Council, the Charnwood Museum, Charnwood Arts and Leicestershire County Council, were the Mayor of Charnwood, Coun Christine Harris, local author Caroline Wessel and Eileen Wheatley, head of marketing and business development at The Loughborough Building Society which is sponsoring the Centre for the coming year.

Chairman of the volunteers, Kathy Phillips opened the proceedings by welcoming the guests and describing examples of the work of the volunteers past, present and planned for the future, many of the outcomes of which were on display.

Local historian and honorary volunteer, Tony Jarram then described his research into architect William Railton’s prolific work around the county – on show in the centre’s exhibition area until the end of February.

After describing her happy past experiences in using the library, the mayor declared the centre open.
