Opposition lodged over 70 homes plan for village
William Davis development in Burton on the Wolds
PLANS have been made to build 70 new homes in the village of Burton on the Wolds.
The application, by Loughborough developer William Davis Ltd is for a plot of pasture land off Melton Road.
Documents with the proposal state that William Davis has held a public consultation exercise with a round table meeting at the village hall last November as well as a special newsletter, sent out to approximately 380 residents, outlining details of the development and asking for any feedback.
The company says that following that feedback a pedestrian link along Melton Road had new been included in the application, along with additional tree planting and some bungalows included on the southern boundary of the site.
The developer says that most of the homes will be two-storey.
However the application has been met with opposition in the village and letters have been sent in to Charnwood Borough Council which will make the decision as to whether the plan can go ahead or not,
Burton on the Wolds parish councillor, Coun Warwick Best has written in to say: “The recent village Wolds Neighbourhood Plan does not identify this proposed area for potential development.
“I am also concerned about the increase in traffic through the village such a proposal would create should it be approved.
“There are two areas that bother me. Firstly, the increase of HGVs during the construction period, which could take many years.
“Secondly increased traffic through the village that would be caused by residents of the proposed new development.
“Burton is traditionally a small village – with one shop, one school, one pub. It lacks the infrastructure and services to support more housing and more people.
Another resident has written in saying: “This site is outside the agreed limits to developments and is classed as being in open countryside.
“The planning application for a similar development of 56 dwellings on Loughborough Road was refused unanimously by Charnwood’s Planning Committee.
“There is not, at the moment, a requirement for this level of development within the Wolds villages.
“The proposal for the development of 70 houses on land at the south of the village represents the largest one that has ever been put forward.
“It is completely inappropriate and will destroy the rural feeling in this part of the village.
“It seems easy for developers to totally ignore the effect on the existence of a rural setting. We still have areas at each end of the village that have not been spoilt. The planting of a large number of trees will not mitigate the effect of such a large development.”
