Medals for running club exploits

-

GIRLS who formed a running group at Oxley Primary School have completed one final lap before breaking up for the summer holiday.

The girls only running club was set up in February when teachers noticed a number of girls in KS2 were reluctant to take part in cross country events.

Headteacher Jason Gilman said: “Talking to them further, it was evident that they simply didn’t enjoy running and in particular found that they were less confident to run alongside boys. Teacher Jonathan Bicknell set a challenge and invited them to a lunchtime ‘girls’ running club’.

“The aim was simply to take part, have a go and make a lap of the field, whether that be running, jogging, walking or a mixture of these.

“I wasn’t sure how long the club would continue but these remarkable girls turned up week after week, no matter if it was cold or not. Having completed so many laps of the field, they have all run the equivalent of more than a half marathon! “On July 8, the girls, supported by their proud parents/carers did one final lap and were awarded with medals to recognise their efforts!”

Some of the group explained how the club has helped them.

Lily said: “I joined the running club to help my running and to make me braver. I was never brave - I didn’t like people seeing me, but if I ran with all the girls I would feel braver. Now that I have done it, it makes me feel great.”

Eliza said: “I joined thr running club to help me be more confident in myself. After I did it, I felt very proud of myself because I achieved something and it made me very happy.”
