Shepshed narrowly defeated in rain affected encounter

SHEPSHED 1st XI faced an away game at Ashby Hastings in a rain affected game reduced to 28 overs per side.

Batting first Shepshed got of to a bad start as Andrew Gibson was caught behind of the third ball of the match. That brought in form Alec Williams to the crease and he and Tom Pepper started to put some runs on the board Williams got to his 50 and the pair put on 79 runs for the seond wicket before Pepper was out LBW for 27.

A further wicket was lost but Williams finished on 76 not out as Shepshed made 123-3.

It was decided due to the rain that Ashby had a new total to chase and the game was reduced to 24 overs giving Ashby a revised total of 111 runs to win.

They started of well as Holt (32) and Yates (25) put 44 on for the first wicket before the home side lost three quick wickets. Shepshed stuck to their task but it Lewis (23 not out) and Brooks (10 not out) took Ashby to 114-5 to take the points and the match.

Shepshed’s 2nd XI were at home against top of the table Newtown Linford 2nd XI. Newtown batted first and finished on 229-3.

In reply it was Jake Lister who held things together yet again as he hung around to frustrate the Newtown bowlers.

Wickets fell aroud him but Lister stood firm and was closing in on his century when he was bowled by Patel for a superb 97 and with further wickets falling Shepshed could only manage 171-8.

Shepshed’s 3rd XI were also at home against Sapcote - it was Shepshed who batted first but they never got going and were bowled out for just 89.

Sapcote did not hang around reaching the required runs to win the match at 90-2.

Shepshed’s 4tt XI were away to Newbold Verdon 3rd XI. Shepshed batted first and it was the returning Paul Oliver and Luke Flynn that Shepshed got of to a flyer, Oliver scored a stylish 58 and Flynn Backed him up with 39 as Shepshed finished the day on 1948.

The Shepshed bowlers were bowling a good line and length in reply and it was Srynath Nair the pick of them as he took 4-28, Angelo Kidd took 2-28 and youngster George Peck took 2-17 as Newbold Verdon were bowled out for just 114.
