Loughborough Echo

Life at Hazlerigg picture special

-

JANINA Holubecki quite rightly thought the Loughborough Echo might like to see some of these old super photos her mum Ann took, or had taken of her, in Loughborough in 1957, when she was working at Hazlerigg Hall of Residence at the-then Engineering College.

Janina wrote to say: “Mum’s name was then Ann Hopper. She was assistant matron at the hall.

“Her sister Josephine was also working at Hazlerigg as cook.

“After working at Hazlerigg, Mum got a job at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) at Nuneaton, where she met and married my dad - a Polish ex-soldier who had come over to Britain after World War Two.

“So, I grew up in the Midlands - near Market Bosworth, to be exact. We came to Bradgate Park a lot as children. Now I’ve returned to Leicestershire after 40 years and have chosen Loughborough as the place to live!

“It’s a great town with lots going on and surrounded by lovely countryside.”

Janina says: “You can see that, behind Hazlerigg and Rutland Halls, there were once open playing fields!

“The snowball fight - my Aunt, Josephine Hopper (the cook at Hazlerigg) is on the left in both photos, in sunglasses!

“That’s my mum, then Ann Hopper, with her trusty Lambretta scooter and again with a passenger (who appears in many of the photos, including the snowball fight)

“I don’t know who any of their colleagues are. Maybe one of your readers would know?

“Four of the photos show what looks like a student rag parade going through Loughborough Streets. You can see Edward Street and Queen Street. I assume the other two photos are of the same event and were taken during 1956 or 57.

“There is also a photo of Mum outside the park gates with a friend’s vintage car, with the Carillon in the background.

As well as other pictures from days out in the area, there is also a collection of wedding photographs.

Janina says: “As the couple are seen posing outside what is unmistakably Hazlerigg, I think that one or both were either students or staff there.

“It is clearly a church wedding - but where?

“I’d love to know if anyone recognises these people - or indeed anyone in any of the photos!”
