Buckingham Palace visit beckons for national STEM competition students

-

PUPILS from Loughborough Schools Foundation are to visit Buckingham Palace to celebrate their continued success in national STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) competitions.

Two teams won prizes in individual categories at the TeenTech Awards, beating off competition from more than 270 schools from across the UK. They will receive their awards from the Duke of York at an awards ceremony at Buckingham Palace later this year.

There was further reason to celebrate as Daljit Kaur, Head of STEM innovation at the Foundation, won a Platinum Teacher Award for her pioneering approach and support for pupils in science and technology subjects.

Pupils from Loughborough Grammar School formed the team ‘Global Glass’ which took home the Wearable Technology Award. They designed a smart translator that will work on smart glasses for seamless integration with day-to-day life, acting as a personal translator for spoken and written language, allowing people to travel anywhere without having to worry about language barriers.

The team behind ‘ Visi-Bowl’, consisting of Maya, Harshini and Ingrid from Loughborough High School, designed a bowl complete with sensors to enable visually impaired people to eat more easily, preventing spillages and food waste.

Daljit said: “It’s great to see more success from pupils at the Foundation. All of the teams that enter STEM competitions continue to amaze me with their creativity, hard work and dedication, with lunchtimes and time after school sacrificed in order to progress their projects.

“This success is a testament to the commitment of our pupils and I’m looking forward to taking them to Buckingham Palace to receive their awards.”
