TWO Scouts from Loughborough have joined 40,000 others taking part in the World Scout Jamboree, a skills and adventure festival in West Virginia, USA.

Evie Elliott (16) and Oliver Scoggins (14) met 45,000 Scouts from nearly every country in the world – sharing their skills while enjoying high adventure in the picturesque part of North America.

The Jamboree offered young people the chance to learn new skills that they can use in other aspects of their life and taste high adventure.

Oliver has been learning all about different cultures and he has tried things he never thought he would – like eating crickets with guacamole! Evie has teamed up with other members from Leicester to run a ‘tea and biscuit’ activity for people all over the world to try and she has been able to sample food and try activities from other cultures as well.

The World Scout Jamboree which ran from July 23- August 2, was the culmination of two years of work for the leaders, which has involved camps and team building events preparing the young people for living on a humid site in West Virginia amongst Scouts from nearly every country in the world.

Evie Elliott,16 from Loughborough said: “You can see so many different countries in one place. We are learning new skills of how to adapt and make friends with people you would usually have to travel to meet. It makes me want to visit some of these countries as they are so friendly!”

The event was opened by UK Chief Scout Bear Grylls, who said: “World Scout Jamborees only happen every four years and tens of thousands of Scouts attend each one. They are incredible festivals of peace, friendship and adventure. Young people will make friends for life with people from over 150 countries, experience different food, language and culture while learning new skills.”
