Ross Aston aston.ross@gmail.com LADIES WALKING GROUP - On Monday 19th August, Normanton-on-Soar Ladies Walking Group will be meeting for a 4.5 mile walk through Grace Dieu Priory and Osgathorpe with a route that will follow part of the old Lost Charnwood Canal and include some stiles. Meet 9:30am at Sutton Bonington playing fields for car sharing or 10:00am or at the starting point at The Bulls Head Car park, Loughborou­gh Rd, Thringston­e, LE67 8LR. QUIET SPACES AT ST JAMES’… TAIZÉ SERVICE - Please join us for a Taizé-style service at the beautiful church of St. James, Normanton on Soar on Tuesday 20th August at 6:30pm led by Anna Caves. This is a quiet contemplat­ive service with lovely Taizé music, readings and prayers, all are welcome.

CHURCH FÊTE - Do come along to the church fête in the beautiful grounds of St James’ Church on Saturday, 14th September, from 2pm to 4pm, on the banks of the River Soar.

We provide a large selection of stalls and games, boat trips on the river, tea in the Church, barbeque etc; and those over 18 will be able to buy a glass of Pimms, with a nonalcohol­ic version available for children/young people and for those driving.

During the afternoon, Ken Godfrey’s Central Jazz Band will be entertaini­ng us and to give the jazz band a break, Normanton-on-Soar Village Choir will be singing a few songs.

All proceeds will go towards our proposal to build a small extension to house a toilet and kitchen facilities at the church.

Donations for the Raffle and Tombola are much needed and may be taken to The Willows, Butt Lane or to the Village Shop in the month before the Fête.

Items for the White Elephant stall and other stalls (cakes, books, plants etc) may be brought to the Church on the Saturday morning.

The Fête will be opened at 2pm. We look forward to seeing you there! Please note that the fête appears to be a little later in the month this year but it is our usual second Saturday in September!

COMMUNITY SHOP - The Normanton on Soar store is a small, well-stocked shop run by a group of volunteers, many of whom are not village residents but who offer their invaluable help.

As well as selling a wide range of products, the community store, located behind the village hall, serves refreshmen­ts and is a regular stop for cycling and walking parties as well as many visitors to Normanton.

Alongside this, the shop acts as a general meeting place for small groups with shared interests including a weekly Scrabble match held on Monday afternoons.

Volunteers are always needed, particular­ly around holiday times. If you could spare an hour here and there please call (01509) 646464 or pop along to the shop and have a chat and a cuppa! (Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10am - 1pm and 2pm - 5pm. Saturday 10am - 1pm.)

NORMANTON ON SOAR PARISH COUNCIL - At the July meeting of Normanton on Soar Parish Council, Mr Ben Fern was co-opted on to the council to fill one of two vacancies.

The Chairman Coun Dave Smith welcomed Ben and the council look forward to working with him over the next four years.

BEST KEPT VILLAGE COMPETITIO­N - The Parish Council are delighted to announce that Normanton on Soar has won their category in the Best Kept Village Competitio­n and will now be entered into the Wilkinson Best in Nottingham­shire stage which will take place in September or October.

The village of Wysall were the runners up with the other finalists being Carlton on Trent and Plumtree. The parish council would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all the village residents who help to keep Normanton looking lovely.
