Speed restrictions in place for M1 works
OVERNIGHT roadworks have started on the M1 motorway near Kegworth as part of the high-tech revamp of this stretch of road - and will involve speed restrictions.
Highways England has introduced restrictions on the M1 between junction 23 and 23a to enable bridge maintenance, resurfacing, road marking replacement and electronic traffic detector system works to be carried out.
The effect will be to, at different times, impose 50mph speed restriction on the northbound carriageway of the M1 from a point two kilometres south of its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 23, to its junction with the link road leading from the A42, at Junction 23a.
The 50mph limit will also affect the southbound carriageway of the M1 from a point two kilometres north of its junction with the link road leading to the A42, at Junction 23a, to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 23, and the slip roads and link roads leading to or from the M1 at Junction 23 or Junction 23a.
It will close the northbound carriageway of the M1 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 23 to its junction with the link road leading from the A42, at Junction 23a, and the southbound carriageway of the M1 from its junction with the link road leading to the A42, at Junction 23a to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 23.
Closures will also affect the entry slip road leading to the northbound carriageway of the M1 at Junction 23; the exit slip road leading from the northbound carriageway of the M1 at Junction 23a; the link road leading from the southbound carriageway of the A42 to the southbound carriageway of the M1 at Junction 23a; and the exit slip road leading from the southbound carriageway of the M1 at Junction 23.
The work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am. It started on Monday, September 2, and is set to take six weeks.
The speed restriction will be in operation for 24 hours per day, for the duration of the works.
Vehicles being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction and closures.
Vehicles being used in connection with the works or for winter maintenance purposes will be exempt from the closures and vehicles being used for special forces purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction.
Diversion routes via the A512 and the A42 and vice versa will be signed.
