COULD YOU WING YOUR WAY TO LIVING HERE?

-

THE new owners of the Thurland Wing of Thurland Castle in Lancashire won’t just get themselves a property steeped in history… the price tag comes with a very special extra.

Whoever buys it will be able to legitimately refer to themselves as the Lord of the Manor – or maybe Lady – as the title is retained and passed on.

The Grade II-listed castle, between Lancaster and Kirkby Lonsdale, dates back to 1404 when Sir Thomas de Tunstall was granted a Royal Licence to crenellate his manor house.

Fast forward almost six centuries, to 2000, and the property was purchased by a residential development company which divided it into 12 individual houses and apartments – seven in the main castle and a further five in the stables.

The Thurland Wing, considered to be the grandest of them all, is the principal wing within the main castle building. Set over three floors, one of its most stunning features is an impressive main reception room, the original castle ballroom, with a grand marble fireplace and wood-panelling.

A large stained glass mullion bay window with window seat provides perfect views across the moat to 10 acres of landscaped grounds, while a second window overlooks the rose garden. There is also a hard tennis court.

In addition to the reception room, the Thurland Wing has a cosier sitting room, hand-crafted kitchen with Aga, and three sizeable bedrooms all with en suite.
