Photographic exhibition

-

THE 65th Annual Exhibition presented by Sileby Photographic Society took place at the Community Centre, which began on Monday, October 14, and was officially opened by the Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Brenda Seaton.

Malcolm Coulton President of the Society, welcomed the Mayor, visitors and this year’s Judge, Steve Myall, EFIAP/P, BPE4* to the week-long event and, after giving his own thoughts and comments on the entries put before him, the awards were then presented to the winners of the various categories.

All the exhibits entered by Sileby’s own members had been judged earlier by Steve, a well known and respected photographer in his own right, and who is very well known on the judging and lecture circuits. He is a member of Keyworth Camera Club. He complimented the Society members on the superb quality of the projected images and prints on display indicating that as he had judged several of the Society’s previous internal competitions, he really expected nothing less.

He was delighted to present the awards as follows:

Best Panel of Six Prints and Best Panel of Six Digital Images entered by invited Societies were awarded to Beeston Camera Club and Sileby Photographic Society respectively. Best Projected Images: Landscape – “Slave Mountain” by Richard Storier

Portrait – “Buddhist Nuns” by Alun Williams;

Nature and Best Overall Image – “Pine Hawkmoth” by Gianpiero Ferrari.

Best Prints: Landscape – “First Light, Lake Wanaka” by Mandy Sherrington.

Portrait – “Tea Picking Duo” by Mandy Sherrington;

Nature and Best Colour Print – “Marsh Fritillary on Forget-me-not” by Gianpiero Ferrari;

Monochrome:

- “Attending the Wounded” by Richard Storier.

A large number of exhibits in all categories had been entered covering a diverse and comprehensive range of subjects reflecting individual photographer’s interests and preferences.

Almost 200 prints, monochrome and colour, were on display, together with panels containing 12 prints each which had been entered for the recent 12-Shot Challenge competition.

The winner of this competition, which had been judged earlier, was Board “I” entered by Alun Williams which, coincidentally, received most votes from the public too.

There were over 160 projected digital images, as well as six panels of 6 images each from invited Societies, plus the winning panel from SPS itself.

The AV presentation this year was inspired by the coastline of England, Scotland and Wales. Set to a background of beautiful instrumental music and featuring the National Trust’s poem “Nation’s Ode to the Coast” this set the scene for the nation’s wonderful coastline and highlighted landscapes, seascapes, lighthouses and the beautiful flora and fauna which grace our shores.

All images captured on camera represented the work of the SPS members resulting in an impressive show of “Coast”, a not inconsiderable achievement by all those involved.

As usual, the Exhibition was very well received by members of the public who provided very positive feed-back and the large number of visitors reflected an excellent attendance throughout despite heavy rain for much of the week.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 28, when Sileby’s own members, Mike Belson and Mark Flatman, will present digital images under the title “M & M’s Variety Pack”.

Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8pm and are held at the Sileby Community Centre.
