EASY LIFE

-

Nottingham

LEICESTER’S Easy Life end their UK tour at Rock City on Friday, following a deal with Island Records, an appearance on Later... with Jools Holland and rave reviews for their ‘sensual slow jams’. Bassist SAM HEWITT introduces the band Tell us a bit about how you got together as a band?

Murray and I (Sam) went to school together and played in jazz and swing bands from about the age of 12, so it all started quite a while ago. Then all of us started writing our own music in different groups as teens and a few years later found ourselves coming together in the beautiful embrace that is Easy Life.

How would you describe your sound?

We are a Hip-Pop Jizz-Jazz group, no question.

What can people expect from your Nottingham gig? People can expect full frontal nudity, a few tears and heavy drinking. Probably in that order. And a light show that would put the Bellagio fountain to shame.

What do you enjoy the most about touring?

I think we all enjoy the showers at the venues – those are a real treat. And the perpetual cycle of fatigue and drunkenness. But most of all, and forgive the cheese, we love turning up to these places we have never been and have been before and seeing people get so gassed, singing along and moshing to music that definitely doesn’t incite such behavior.

What’s been your best live gig appearance as a performer?

The year was 1999 at the Plumtree school nativity, I was a shepherd with a solo in Little Donkey – need I say more. Either that or Glastonbury/ Coachella I guess.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’m into the new EARTHGANG album, Chance The Rapper’s debut album, Arlo Parks who’s doing big things, and then always lots and lots of classic jazz.

Who was the first band/singer you saw play live?

I saw Jools Holland and his band when I was 6/7. Maybe something clicked and I thought “I want to be on a TV show with this man”.

What were you doing before you got into music? Murray grew up on a farm tending his longhorns and plucking Christmas turkeys. Jord worked as a music teacher at a school in Leicester. Olly played in his family’s Irish show band. Lew worked in TK Maxx and I was packaging up white powders for my dad’s business.

What’s next for you in 2019?

A few dates around Europe before we jet off to LA to record a music video. Then we have to think about recording our first album.

■ This Friday, Rock City, Talbot Street, Nottingham, sold out.
