Below strength Carillon A slip to heavy home defeat
LOUGHBOROUGH CARILLON ‘A’ 0
WELFORD 4
AFTER last week’s cup win Carillon’s A Team were hoping that the improvement in form might translate into valuable league points.
Sadly it was not to be. It was a strong Welford side that made the longest journey of the season to Loughborough and in the first half they appeared determined to make the visit worthwhile.
Player availability, particularly amongst the Carillon men meant that the make up of the team was very different from the previous week and while Loughborough competed hard, passes went astray or runs were missed as players struggled to get on the same wavelength.
By half time Welford had taken a three goal lead and while this was probably a little fortunate it left Carillon with a mountain to climb in the second half. Time did prove to be a benefit as the second half saw a far more cohesive performance and only some fine saves from the Welford keeper prevented Carillon from getting at least the one goal their performance desreved.
It seemed particularly harsh then when Welford snatched a fourth as Godwin in the Carillon goal could only parry a shot into his own net. Matt Bucklow and Clare Hawksworth continued to drive the team forward but the breakthrough just would not come.
If the first half was a cause for concern the second gave Loughborough some cause for optimism for the rest of the season as new players start to gel and others arrive back from injury.
