It’s a morale boosting performance for Quorn

UHLSPORT UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION COGENHOE UNITED 0 QUORN AFC 5

QUORN AFC were back in League action last Saturday against Cogenhoe United.

Their opposition sat in the bottom three of the UCL Premier Division, recording only one win so far this season against bottom side – Sleaford Town FC.

Following Quorn’s FA Vase exit last week and four draws in a row before then, Quorn needed a morale boasting performance to start the belief again that they will be challengers for the division.

Following the loss of Kieran Fenton to Ilkeston Town last week and injuries sustained in the squad, first team manager Martin Carruthers needed to look to bring in some players to help in the coming months. They welcomed Max Foster, a centre back that Martin knows from his time at Basford United, to Quorn and would come straight into the match-day squad as well as Leo Marshall, a left-back who they took on loan from Notts County against who came straight into the starting 11 today.

Quorn showed the best first half performance of the season so far. On a cold and rainy afternoon they were clinical in all departments and Cogenhoe couldn’t live with their swift and quick attacking play and physically all over the pitch. Set pieces were improved and Quorn looked calm on the ball both in attack and defence. It only took five minutes of the first half for Max Foster on his debut to coolly head in a corner ball.

Joseph Brothwell continued his scoring run with a well hit shot at goal following some good team play in the 11th minute.

Tawanda Mangondoza received the ball in the 13th minute on the left wing and cut inside to hit a vicious shot at the Cogenhoe goal.

Signature Steven Hart step-overs and moving the ball across the Cogenhoe area allowed him to find the space he needed to hit the ball with power to make it 0-4 to Quorn in the 33rd minute.

In the second half, Cogenhoe came out much more organised and aware of where to get themselves when Quorn were on the attack. Quorn continued to press for more goals but only managed to add to the total by one. Joseph Brothwell’s second goal of the game was another well placed finish following some great attacking play by Quorn in the 66th minute, the only goal of the second half. Quorn managed to see the game through and at the final whistle – a vital three points.

Club secretary Darren Kay said: “We are delighted to get back to winning ways and this was the morale boasting performance we was looking for.

“Two excellent debuts for Max Foster and Leo Marshall as well as a clean-sheet are also big talking points from today’s match. Joseph Brothwell’s run of goals continue and he has now scored six goals in his last five games. A great day at the office for Quorn.”
