Photography competition

-

MEMBERS of Sileby Photographic Society met on Monday, November 18, when the judging of the 4th and final round of the quarterly competition took place.

The visiting judge for this round was Ian Pinn.

Entries submitted were those of the author’s choice and, with no particular theme being the order of the day, an extensive range of subjects was available to competing participants.

Ian, therefore, needed to draw on his own considerable experience when carefully deliberating over the prints and digital images. He offered constructive and in-depth comments for each before awarding his marks, to a maximum of 20 points, which would establish the winning entries.

Beginning with the monochrome prints, Mandy Sherrington secured 1st and 2nd places with “Boulders at Moeraki” and “Guggenheim, Bilbao” respectively, with equal 3rd place being awarded to Richard Storier and Colin Machin for their entries “The Advance” and “Udawalawe Reflection”.

The colour print section proved an equally tricky one for Ian to judge with three prints being awarded the maximum 20 points. Kevin Blood, Pete Smith and Richard Storier over-trumped all opposition with their entries “Little Egret Wading”, “Wasp Orchid with Hoverfly” and “Streymoy” respectively.

Coming to a conclusion when casting his eye over the projected digital images proved no easy task either, with many excellent entries for Ian to consider before making his decision.

Mark Flatman and Gianpiero Ferrari took top honours with “Harley Portrait” and “Green Hairstreak Pair” respectively.

Richard Storier and Gianpiero shared second place with “Drangarnir Sea Stacks” and “Green Winged Orchid and Cowslip”

Points awarded in all rounds of the competition will be totalled up when the overall winners will be presented with their awards at the Annual Dinner held in January.

John Hoogerwerf thanked Ian for putting in a lot of thought to support his comments, at the same time being able to draw on his own vast experience.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 2, when visiting judge, Bob Rowe, ARPS, CPAGB, will cast his beady eye over members’ entries for the Thematic Competition. The theme this year will be “In Flight” and the medium, monochrome digital.

Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8pm and are held at Sileby Community Centre.
