IMPRESSIVE building designs in Charnwood have been honoured.

Charnwood Design Awards, run by the borough Council, recognise high-quality building design and the excellent work of owners, agents and contractors.

The 2019 winners, revealed at an awards ceremony, are Loughborough University Student Village, Fowke Street, Rothley and Mountsorrel Memorial Centre.

Richard Bennett, head of planning and regeneration at the council, said: “I would like to congratulate our winners and all our finalists in this year’s awards.

“There has been an exceptional level of quality which is very encouraging to see. The Council is committed to improving the quality of design in the built environment because it has a significant impact on our communities. Outstanding design can help enhance our communities, stimulate the local economy and make Charnwood a better place to live, work and visit.

“We hold the Charnwood Design Awards to give deserved recognition to outstanding design and hopefully inspire other projects. This complements our existing work on a day-to-day basis to encourage good design when supporting applicants in the planning process.”

Loughborough University Student Village was chosen as the overall winner because of the contribution it makes to placemaking, sustainability and wellbeing.

Mountsorrel Memorial Centre was considered the best ‘new build’ scheme in terms of architectural quality.

Fowke Street, Rothley, was chosen as a winner because of the contribution it makes in terms of new buildings within a conservation area.

Richard Taylor, chief operating officer at Loughborough University, said: “We were delighted to be shortlisted for the Charnwood Design Awards and enjoyed welcoming the judging panel to the student village.

“It was fantastic to find out the project had been chosen as the overall winner. The scheme was a complex project and a real team effort so I’d also like to pass my thanks and congratulations onto our partners.

“All of the shortlisted schemes this evening demonstrated highquality design so my congratulations also go to them.”

The other finalists were Storkit Meadows, Wymeswold; 58 Brook Street, Wymeswold; The Oaks, 133 The Ridings, Rothley; Milk Bottle Yard, Forest Road, Loughborough; and Loughborough Schools Foundation Sports Hall.
