Photographic competition
THE annual Thematic Competition took place at Sileby Photographic Society’s meeting held on Monday, December 2.
The form of the competition is chosen by combining a subject with a medium, with both elements drawn randomly so that a wide variety of topics and presentation forms are covered.
This year, the subject was ‘In Flight ’and these needed to be presented as digital images.
Bob Rowe, ARPS, CPAGB, was the visiting judge and taking into account the competition rules, he applied his own photographic knowledge and expertise when awarding points for each entry.
Members’ interpretation of ‘In Flight’ provoked imagination and interest and the digital images entered for the competition included possibly the obvious choices in what could be described as quite a limiting subject.
Birds, aircraft and hot air balloons featured in the winning entries with first place being awarded to Alun Williams for “Flight”. Second and third places were awarded to Richard Storier for “F16” and to Mandy Sherrington for “Tranquillity” respectively.
The high standard of all of the entries was praised by the judge who recognised that selecting the award winning ones was not altogether straightforward.
During the second half of the evening, members had been asked to provide digital images from their own portfolios so that Bob could cast his eye over them and offer constructive criticism or otherwise, without the pressures of competition. This proved very beneficial not only for the participants, but for everyone else present too, and it turned out to be a very useful exercise.
Bob was thanked by Colin Machin for a job well done, the results of which reflected three worthy award winners.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 16, which will be a fun night for members in the form of pictures and mince pies and no doubt plenty of other Christmas goodies too.
Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the Society’s meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8pm and are held at Sileby Community Centre. Further information can be obtained from the society’s website, www.silebyps.org.uk
