PASSION Youth Club in Shepshed is thowing open its doors next week for a special open day to let residents see what the club has to offer for youngsters.

Based in The Bull Ring, the centre is for young people aged between 11 and 18-years-old, and under the management of Vicky Gould, 2019 was a year of expansion with five projects now under the Passion umbrella.

Vicky Gould said: “We stage ‘Car Park Coffee’ every Monday and Friday from 7.45am-8.35am outside the St Botolphs Church hall, offering free tea, coffee, hot chocolate and milk. We give out around 40-50 free drinks to Iveshead and St Botolphs Primary school students and parents. It offers young people the opportunity to talk to someone before school and set them up for the day.

“Our ‘Drop in’ sessions run at the youth club on Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 7pm-9pm. This is where Passion opens the doors to the local young people of Shepshed and surrounding areas as we do have young people coming over from Loughborough. It is an open session so has no structure. We do however offer various one off events for the young people to participate in.

“Our ‘Chat and Chomp’ is a cooking session which runds on Friday from 4pm-6pm. Youngsters are taught back to basics cooking, for example short crust pastry, vegetable pasta. It is also used to prepare the young people for the food fundraiser events. They also learn that they need to clean up after themselves learning valuable life skills.

“Our ‘Food fundraiser’ runs on the second Monday of the month. Passion opens its door and anybody is able to attend. We offer a main course and dessert plus unlimited tea/coffee/juice for a donation of around £5. The young people either make the main course or the dessert, the other is donated by the local community. This session teaches the young people communication skills also allowing them to have responsibility for something important.

“They are raising valuable funds for the upkeep of Passion. They feel they are contributing towards the money required to keep their centre open.

“We also run a ‘ Homework club’ on a Thursday also from 4-6pm. This is open to any young person and includes some sort of food like burgers or pizza as they have come straight from school so will be hungry.”

Passion will be opening its doors on Saturday, January 25, from 10am2pm to allow the local community to come and have a look around.

Vicky added: “We will have volunteers and young people on hand to show them what the hub has to offer. There will be bacon and sausage cobs for sale and free tea and coffee.”
