Shepshed Dynamo crash out of league cup at the quarter final stage after rare defeat at Dovecote

-

KITMANUK LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINAL SHEPSHED DYNAMO 1 DEEPING RANGERS 2 SHEPSHED Dynamo exited the KitmanUK League Cup at the quarter final stage at the Dovecote on Tuesday night going down 2-1 to Deeping Rangers who now face Rothwell Corinthians in the semi finals.

Shepshed made six changes to their starting line up from the table topping 2-1 victory over local rivals Quorn on Saturday. Whereas sixth place in the Premier Division Deeping Rangers made one change from a same score line victory over Cogenhoe United.

In an evenly fought contest it was Rangers who took a two goal lead into the break with two late Cameron Johnson goals and although Dynamo pressed hard in the latter stages a Harry Wakefield effort against the post and a late goal from Matt Melbourne couldn’t guide Shepshed into the semi finals.

The first chance of the game fell to Deeping with Jack Gurney shooting wide of Matty White’s goal on three minutes.

Rangers then came under a spell of Shepshed pressure in a game which was played out with few chances for either side in the first half. Karl Whymark fired a free kick wide on 29 minutes and a few minutes later a further free kick went into the arms of Lewis Elsom. Deeping then came the closest with Jake Betts clearing off the line from Johnson on the half hour mark.

Deeping put Shepshed under pressure at the end of the first half Matty White alert to the danger coming out of his area to clear on 40 minutes and the pressure paid off two minutes later Gurney and Johnson getting clear of the Dynamo defence and the latter slotting under White to give Deeping the lead.

Rangers were in the ascendancy with Mooney just wide on 45 minutes and with the half closing out Deeping doubled the lead Lewis Hillard found Johnson with a free kick who turned neatly to precisely place his shot into the bottom corner past White.

After the break, Shepshed once again came under pressure from the visitors with Mooney’s speculative lob clearing the Dynamo goal, then his free kick into White followed by a further wide effort from Gurney.

With the game entering the final 10 minutes Shepshed turned it up a gear to try and salvage the game and take the tie to penalties.

Whymark was wide on 80 minutes and then a minute later Elsom saved from Wakefield and Whymark respectively. Before Josh Mundell’s effort was blocked.

Dynamo did pull a goal back as the game went into injury time John King found Jacob Croud down the left who moved the ball to Melbourne to guide past the advancing Elsom into the opposite side of the goal.

But there wasn’t enough time for Dynamo to level the tie and it was Deeping Rangers who advanced to the semi finals
