Thieves raid business, steal empty drawers

The hapless pair were also caught on CCTV

A PAIR of hapless thieves managed to break into a leisure business but left empty handed despite escaping with two till drawers which had been emptied of cash.

The break-in took place at Loughborough’s Spot On Leisure snooker, pool and darts centre, in Kenilworth Avenue, shortly after the club closed just before 1am on Monday last week.

The dynamic dunces even went back to an accomplice’s car to get a bigger crowbar after realising the one they had brought wouldn’t do the job.

Once inside the premises, which has 13 snooker tables, 13 pool table and three dartboards, they smashed their way into the two tills, leaving management with an estimated £1,600 bill to replace them.

Manager Josie Dockray, who was turned out of bed by police at around 3am, said: “It looks like they broke in shortly after we locked up.

“They pulled the tills out of their sockets, ripping out wiring before escaping with one complete till and one till drawer, but the tills had no money in them.

“They must have been disappointed when they opened them up.

“They were found later near the university, damaged and of no use.

“They have cost between £600 and £800 each to replace.”

She added: “The CCTV shows them being dropped near the business in a car which then drove off.

“They first tried to get in using one crowbar before going back to the car, which I think was hidden out of sight somewhere, to get a bigger one to force the lock.

“But it was all a waste of time for them and expense for us as there was no money in the tills. There never is overnight.”

Josie described the thieves as wearing Nike Air and Adidas clothing, with one wearing a gilet, adding: “If you can identify anyone in the pictures please contact us directly or the police.”

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers received a report during the early hours of Monday regarding a burglary at a premises in Kenilworth Avenue, Loughborough.

“It is believed the incident happened between 12.35am and 12.50am.

“Entry was forced to a door at the premises and two tills were stolen. The tills were not reported to have any money in them at the time.

“No-one was in the premises at the time and no injuries have been reported.

“Enquiries remain ongoing into the incident and anyone with any information should call 101.”
