Annual dinner for society
SILEBY Photographic
Society held its annual dinner on Monday, January 13, when 40 members and their guests attended and enjoyed an excellent meal at Ferrari’s Trattoria Restaurant, Quorn, the traditional venue for the society’s New Year celebration.
Unfortunately, due to illness, Malcolm Coulton, president of the society, was unable to attend and it, therefore, fell to John Hoogerwerf, his deputy, to do the honours.
He recorded his thanks to everyone who had attended such an enjoyable event despite Storm Brendan putting in its own appearance at the beginning of the evening, ensuring a soggy arrival for many.
The occasion of the annual dinner provided the perfect opportunity for the winners of the various internal competitions held throughout Sileby’s photographic year to be officially recognised and each of those members were duly congratulated on their individual successes and presented with their awards.
SPS hosts an assortment of competitions with each entry, be it prints, monochrome and colour, or digital images, benefiting from constructive comments made by a visiting independent and impartial judge.
This not only provides a level playing field for all those taking part but everyone has the opportunity to learn and take on board hints and tips provided by an experienced photographer at the same time.
Competitions held throughout the year comprise the ‘Graham Johnson’ 12-Shot Challenge, the Quarterly, Thematic, Annual and Panel Competitions, together with the Digital Image Knock-Out. These offer a range of challenges, requiring not only photographic expertise, but imagination and thought as to composition and subject relating to the competition in question, and all prove popular throughout the calendar year of events with SPS members.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, 27th January when visiting lecturer Nat Coalson, ARPS, will present “American Landscapes with Monochrome Techniques”.
An excellent and varied 2019-2020 programme continues through to June of this year, after which outdoor summer social activities take over. Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8pm, and are held at Sileby Community Centre.
