Charnwood College ‘requires improvement’
CHARNWOOD College has been rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ after its latest inspection by OFSTED.
The inspection was carried out on January 8-9 following a previous inspection in 2017.
The college, part of the David Ross Education Trust, is now rated ‘Good’ in terms of behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and sixth-form provision.
The detailed report says leaders are committed to getting the best out of every pupil, pupils are proud of their school and know that their school is improving.
It states there is a positive learning culture across the school, behaviour has improved considerably and there is a harmonious learning atmosphere throughout the school
But the inspectors found ‘not all pupils achieve as well as they should in all subjects’, and ‘not all teachers have high expectations of all pupils. They do not always set work that is demanding enough’.
The quality of education and overall effectiveness was rated as ‘requires improvement’ and the report stated that “Leaders should ensure that teachers systematically check what pupils know and can do so that pupils learn new knowledge and develop their understanding effectively.”
Alastair O’Connor, principal at Charnwood College, said: “I am delighted that the hard work of our pupils and staff has been recognised in this inspection report.
“This is a major shift for our Academy and the recognition is testament to the hard work of pupils, parents and staff, who have worked together with colleagues from the David Ross Education Trust’s central team, to boost pupils’ aspirations and outcomes, and to encourage a positive learning environment.
“I am looking forward to continuing to work alongside our pupils, parents and staff to ensure that we build on this success and that we swiftly address the recommendations made by Ofsted that will allow us to improve further.”
