Sixteen town para athletes offered WCP membership

BRITISH Athletics has announced that several Loughborou­gh-based athletes have been offered membership to the Paralympic World Class Programme (WCP) in 2020.

In total, 16 membership­s have been granted to individual­s affiliated with the University, with two levels on offer; ‘Podium’ and ‘Podium Potential’.

These include:

Paralympic Podium: Hollie Arnold (coached by Loughborou­gh’s Head of Throws, David Turner), Olivia Breen, Jonathan Broom-Edwards (Loughborou­gh University Alumnus), Libby Clegg (coached by Head of Para Sprints, Joe McDonnell), Dan Greaves (Loughborou­gh University Alumnus), Sophie Hahn, Jonnie Peacock, Stef Reid, Richard Whitehead, Thomas Young (coached by Head of Para Sprints, Joe McDonnell), Kadeena Cox (Coached by Head of Para Sprints, Joe McDonnell).

Paralympic Podium Potential: Zac Shaw,

Zak Skinner, Ali Smith

Guide runners: Chris Clarke (Loughborou­gh Alumni and coached by Head of Para Sprints, Joe McDonnell), Thomas Somers (Loughborou­gh University Alumnus).

Elsewhere, Loughborou­gh athletes also enjoyed a successful Para-Cycling Track World Championsh­ips earlier this month in Canada.

Sam Ruddock finished an impressive 4th in the MC1 Kilo in his first internatio­nal event in Para-Cycling having recently switched over from Para-Athletics.

Alumna Crystal Lane-Wright also wowed the crowd by finishing with two silvers in Women’s C5 3000m Individual Pursuit and Women’s C5 Scratch Race respective­ly.

Loughborou­gh University’s Head of Para Sport, Nik Diaper, said: “As former Loughborou­gh students, we are incredibly proud of both Sam and Crystal’s achievemen­ts and with Sam being a Loughborou­gh based athlete, we look forward to welcoming him back on campus.

“We wish both of them the very best in the final build-up to the Paralympic Games later this year.”
