Charnwood Warriors beat county rivals to stay on top

WARRIORS 62 CHARNWOOD Rutland Warriors faced their local rivals TFC on Saturday in an Leicesters­hire derby. After an exciting and close game Warriors were victorious, winning out 62-49.

Warriors and TFC started the game evenly matched with both teams showing consistenc­y in their attacking ends and neither defensive units breaking the play. After two games out Charnwood’s Goal Shooter Ellie Gallacher returned shooting accurately giving Warriors the edge 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Warriors’ defence stepped up with Melissa Oakman, Abi Hymas, Michelle Magee linking well to force TFC errors whilst Lucy Alexandar and Georgie Brock-Taylor worked hard through the mid court to work the ball to goal. Warriors pulled away by eight goals but TFC didn’t let up and at half time Warriors led by six, 30-24.

The third quarter Warriors made some changes in the attacking end with Beth Gabriel coming to GA and Sam Griffin moving out to WA. With Bethan Lount

on into the GK position the changes had

a positive impact with more space in the attacking end and Lount making an impact with some impressive turnovers. Warriors stretched the lead 47-36 heading into the final 15 minutes.

In the final quarter Warriors brought

on fresh legs with Katie Welsh at C and

they continued to remain calm composed despite some great turnovers from TFC threatenin­g to close the gap Warriors maintained their lead and won the game 62-49.
