Gadget to help you pass wind on an airplane

Design by Cotes company

- ADRIAN TROUGHTON

THE Cotes-based firm that gave the world fartfiltering underpants has come up with a gadget that allows you to pass wind on a plane without causing a stink.

The Shreddies Carbonana is a banana-shaped foam insert designed to be worn in the rear of the underwear between the buttocks to filter flatulence odours.

This new product is the brainchild of Paul O’Leary, owner of Shreddies Ltd - the company that gave us the fart-filtering underwear of the same name.

Paul, whose firm is based in Cotes near Loughborough, came up with the idea after his own slightly uncomfortable experience on board a flight to New York.

He felt that air travellers should be able to be up in clouds without assaulting the noses of fellow passengers.

And his resulting invention to tackle the problem has been called a “gamechanger”.

Niket Sonpal, New York City-based gastroenterologist and professor of clinical medicine at Touro College, explained that at about 6000-8000 feet airplane cabins become pressurized.

This causes swelling of the gases in the body, which in turn causes excess flatulence.

“Air expands at higher altitudes, the gas in our intestines expands too, up to 30 percent more than usual and that air needs to go somewhere,” he said.

Hence the Carbonana was born.

“This is a real game changer for air travel,” said Richard Woolley, managing director at Shreddies Ltd.

“The Carbonana will improve passenger comfort for all on board”

The Carbonana is lined with activated carbon cloth, covered in a jersey fabric and is able to be washed and re-used.

Shreddies sell a range of flatulence filtering products including pyjamas, jeans and cushions.

The business was founded in 2009 by Mr O’Leary, who came up with the original fart-filtering concept.

The Carbonana is £19 and comes in black and nude colours.
