Drink driver crashed into parked car

- TOM MACK

A MAN who crashed into a parked car while driving home had been drinking after playing in a village football match.

Jack Tormey had been to a village pub after the game where he drank one pint of lager and a shandy. Thinking he was okay to drive he set off in his Jaguar XE but hit the parked car in Station Road, Kegworth, at about 7.30pm on Saturday, February 8.

The 26-year-old project manager called the police. After he failed a breath test he was taken to a police station and put in a cell for a short time.

At Leicester Magistrates’ Court he said he was determined never to drink and drive again.

He said: “Being arrested, being put in a cell, is something I never want to experience again.”

Tormey, of Craner Road, Castle Donington, said he had no excuses for what he did.

He said: “I grew up in a small village and play football in the team.

“I had a pint and a shandy and it’s a strong beer.

“I didn’t see the vehicle and collided with the back corner of the parked car. There isn’t any excuse for it.”

He had given police a breathalyser reading of 43 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal drink-driving limit is 35 microgrammes and anyone over that level automatically gets a 12-month driving ban.

The court heard that Tormey was expecting to lose his job after his licence was suspended.

He said he had been in the job for only three months and that it involved driving all over Europe.

He said he was also facing having to make the payments on the damaged Jaguar, which he would be unable to drive.

Stephen Bryan, chairman of the magistrates’ bench, said: “We’ve noted your remorse and we hope that you’ve learned your lesson.

“We note there’s a probability you will lose your job.”

They fined Tormey £507 and ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £50 victim surcharge.

He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
