Students reach National Skills Challenge Finals
A WINNING performance from Loughborough College business students has secured them a coveted spot at the National Skills Challenge Finals in London.
After impressing judges with their solution to a real-life business challenge posed by Sports Interactive, who create some of the UK’s most popular online games, Ellie Sharpe, Tyrone James, Eduardo Rodrigues, Allanah Kofi and Henry Jackson will compete against teams from across the country for the 2020 title.
Loughborough College hosted a full-day workshop with National Skills Challenge, in Association with Digital Institute London, where the College’s BTEC Business students were tasked with making the game Football Manager more appealing to the 13-21 market.
“The students couldn’t change the fundamental structure or function of the game but they could create enhancements which they felt would be more attractive to the specified age group, which the company was struggling to reach.
“They were then invited to put together a strategy for a social media campaign to market their idea which they had to present to more than 100 people, including judges,” said Loughborough College Business lecturer Matt Coleman.
“It provided the students with a fantastic insight into marketing and encouraged them to utilise a whole host of skills, not least in teamwork and confidently communicating their ideas in a high-pressure situation. All the students who took part worked incredibly hard and we were very proud of them all.
“The judges remarked on the consistently high quality of ideas amongst the students and the winning team’s creativity, confidence and charisma.
“The students are very excited to be heading to London to represent Loughborough College in the national finals.”
The National Skills Challenge finals take place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London on April 1.
