Vandalised trees are replaced

-

THE local community have come together to ensure 30 trees which were vandalised at Charnwood Water in Loughborough have been replaced.

Park rangers who work for the borough council’s open spaces partner idverde recently discovered the trees which had been planted last year, had been either uprooted or broken.

The trees were originally planted by members of the Sikh community to celebrate 550 years of the birth Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.

After finding out about the damage, local business Coles Nurseries offered to replace the trees free of charge. Members of the Sikh community in Loughborough recently returned to Charnwood Water to plant the replacement trees.

Coun Jenny Bokor, lead member for Loughborough said: “It was clearly disappointing to see these newly planted trees subject to vandalism. The trees had been donated by a community group who wanted to help make our borough even greener.

“I’d like to thank Coles Nurseries for kindly donating the new trees which has enabled the community to replant the area. It’s excellent to see the local community working together.”

Sarab Ryatt on behalf of the Loughborough Sikh community said: “The members of the local Sikh community would like to thank Coles Nurseries and the Idverde ranger team for their help in re-planting the trees.”

Vince Edwards, customer development manager at Coles Nurseries said: “We were happy to assist with the free replacement of the trees.

“We would like to say well done to the volunteers for all of their hard work on replanting them.”
