FLOWERS and candles have been lovingly placed on a pavement to mark the spot where a driver lost his life in a car crash.

Grieving friends and relatives have left the tributes after a man, in his 30s, died after his car hit a lamppost, a wall and several parked cars before ending up on its roof in Ashby Road, Loughborough, at the weekend.

The man was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene just after midnight on Sunday morning.

The tributes have been left next to the twisted remains of the lamppost that the red BMW collided with.

They are by side by side with plastic traffic cones, placed there to keep people away from the wrecked lamppost.

A young man, who is staying in a house near to the crash scene, told how a relative had knocked on the door on Monday.

“He wanted to talk to us about what had happened.

“He went away then came back with some flowers and candles. He asked us for some scissors so he could cut the tie on the flowers and put them in a makeshift vase.

“It’s all so sad. All of us in the house pass on our deepest condolences to the dead man’s family.”

A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN has told how he rushed to help a motorist who lost their life in a fatal car crash in Loughborough.

The vehicle smashed into a lamppost, a wall and parked cars before ending up on its roof in Ashby Road at around midnight Sunday (May 17).

A nearby member of the public said they were just about to go to bed when they heard a car coming down the street.

The young professional, who was staying at his girlfriend’s, described the sound as “!like a plane’ followed by a massive bang’.”

He said: “I looked out of the bedroom window which faces into the street and saw a car on its roof in our driveway.

“As I was looking out a nearby lamppost just toppled over. It was weird.

“Someone called 999 and me and a housemate went outside to see if we could help.

“The car had smashed into the lamppost and demolished our wall and hit one of three cars in our driveway.

“When we got outside, there was smoke from the crash and brick dust in the air and the smell of oil and petrol.”

He added: “We did not want to touch the car because the lamppost was still live with electricity running through it and there was lots of oil and petrol and it could have exploded at any minute.

“Also, because you should not move anyone who has been injured like that.

“I was told that moving them could cause more damage.

“Then before we knew it the police and ambulance arrived. They took over instantly and we let them get on with it.”

Leicestershire Police have confirmed that a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash which involved a red BMW.

The 20-year-old temporary resident ,a quantity surveyor and part-time student, is in lockdown in the house with his girlfriend and four other people.

He said that he and his housemate stayed up late talking about what they had seen, unable to sleep.

“We were all talking about what had happened and what we had seen. There was no way we could have just gone to sleep after what we had just experienced.”

He said the police called at the house to get statements and they told them that the driver had died.

“It is awful for this sort of thing to happen.” he said. “I have never seen anything like this in my life before.

“It’s all so sad. All of us in the house pass on our deepest condolences to the dead man’s family.”

According to a spokesperson for Leicestershire Police, officers from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses.

She said: “A red BMW 5 series, which was travelling towards the town centre, left the road before colliding with street furniture and a wall which in turn damaged five unattended parked cars.

“The driver, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The road was closed for around seven hours while emergency services dealt with the incident. Ashby Road reopened just after 7am on Monday morning.

Detective Constable John Borlase, from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation unit, said: “I would like to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle beforehand to get in touch.

“Alternatively anyone who have dashcam footage relating to the collision, is asked to make contact with the police.”
