Duck is killed by dog at Hermitage fishing lake

- TOM MACK

A DUCK has been killed by a dog at the fishing lake where a swan was savaged recently.

An anonymous person posting on Spotted Whitwick said the incident happened on June 12 at Hermitage Fishing Lake and Recreation Ground, in Whitwick.

They said: “My daughter just been for walk round the lake in Whitwick and some man walking a dog off a lead had just killed a duck.

“Please just keep them on a lead round the lake - this is a place of beauty not a place to see one animal kill another.”

On the morning of Tuesday, May 19, a swan was injured by a dog at the lake and had to be put down.

That incident was dealt with by Leicestershire Police, which has also been informed of the latest incident.

People responding to the latest incident on Spotted Whitwick expressed their dismay that dog walkers were letting their pets off their leads.

One woman said: “Sick of irresponsible dog owners!

“We have the privilege of walking around this beautiful lake, which is home to so much wildlife.

“Be respectful and keep your dogs on leads. It isn’t hard.

“This is the second death already since the babies have been born.”

Another woman said: “Unbelievable, isn’t it?

“Why are people dogs off leads

“Another dead animal that could’ve been avoided. So sad.”

One woman reported witnessing a dog trying to attack swans recently.

She said: “I was there the other still letting their night when a group of three people had their dogs off the lead and one went straight down to the swan and her cygnets who were on the nest.

“So sad to see the wildlife in danger like this. Dogs should be on the lead around the lake.”

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: “We were called today at about 11.45am about a dog causing some commotion among the birds and then later had one of the birds in its mouth.

“Our inquiries are continuing into the report.”
