Child friendly PPE scrubs created for hospice

-

A FORMER care assistant has been using her sewing skills to make child friendly PPE scrubs for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

Cindy has put her sewing machine and sewing skills to good use by creating child friendly PPE scrubs for the Care Team at Rainbows to wear, as they continue to offer end-of-life care to children and young people with life-limiting conditions; while supporting the NHS.

Cindy, from Barwell, who has donated the child friendly scrubs to the charity, said: “I was a care assistant for 20 years but had to leave the profession due to a shoulder injury and I wanted to give something back. After making a few scrub bags, I sent off for a pattern to make scrubs and then began making them Rainbows.

“I have been sewing for a number of years and make a lot of fancy dress costumes, particularly for Halloween. I wanted to use my sewing skills to do something which would help and bring a smile to faces, making the child-friendly scrubs seemed the right thing to do. I began by using fabric I already had to make the scrubs and since then I’ve received donations of fabric and money, which I’ve used to purchase more fabric and make more scrubs.”

Head of nursing and clinical operations at Rainbows, Tony Martin said: “We can’t thank Cindy enough for the fantastic donation of child friendly PPE scrubs. Our Care Team love wearing them and they’ve for brought smiles to the faces of those we’re looking after, as well as to our Care Team’s faces.

“It’s great to see the local community continuing to support the work we do, particularly during these difficult times.”

Rainbows are continuing to offer their end-of-life care and online Family Support services to those who rely on the charity. In addition, Rainbows are supporting the NHS by looking after children and young people from children’s hospitals throughout the East Midlands to help relieve strains on the NHS by freeing up its capacity; and earlier this month the charity launched a bereavement support service for families who have lost a loved one in Leicester hospitals during Covid-19.
