A SOCIAL MEDIA vote calling for the site of the former Dilips Megabooze to be turned into a fish and chip shop is to become a reality.

The Megabooze in Brook Street, Shepshed closed in January 2019 and after the closure, owner Dilip Patel ran a Facebook poll asking residents if they would prefer the site to become a laundrette or a fish and chip shop.

A total of 1,400 votes were cast with a massive 80 per cent in favour of a fish and chip shop.

Now 18 months on plans for change of use from retail to hot food takeaway have been given the go ahead by Charnwood Borough Council and the lease has been taken on by Connor Fettes who hopes to open the doors to his new venture in a matter of weeks.

Internal alterations to the site include the provision of a serving counter and kitchen with opening hours approved from noon to 11.59pm every day except Sunday.

For Shepshed born Connor he is looking forward to the new venture and offering the town a new food option, creating several full and part-time jobs in the process.

He said: “Shepshed, you spoke, you voted and now you will have! I have lived in Shepshed all my life, as have my family, so I thought there is an opportunity here to give Shepshed and surrounding villages something they want and hopefully will use.

“I aim to provide locally sourced, high quality produce and am in the process of partnering with a few local businesses to offer some “specials weeks” but rest assured your fish, chips, pies and sausages will always be there.

“We have a local fish monger who will supply all our MSC accredited fish, ensuring the fish we are using is from sustainable sources.

“Clearly there is much more work to be done both to the interior and exterior of the shop. My thanks to all the local tradesmen and women that are carrying out the work needed to bring the shop up to scratch.

“It is vital for us to have the support of Shepshed and surrounding villages and in return we must give back to them in any way we can. Sponsorship for local clubs and societies will be at the top of the list.

“If all goes to plan, we hope to have the shop, which will be named Ang’s, opened by the end of August, beginning of September.”
