LEICESTER City footballer Wes Morgan has declared his support to the Rainbows Hospice appeal.

The defender has backed the appeal, which was launched by the hospice that cares for children and young people, as the charity faces loses of up to £1 million because of the Covid-19 crisis.

Wes, who has visited Rainbows on several occasions and spent time with the families, also made a donation of £1,000 to the appeal.

He said: “Rainbows is a very special place and the work that is carried out there is just amazing. I understand it’s difficult to raise money in these unprecedented times and I hope this small contribution will help.”

Since the start of the outbreak, the charity has suffered a huge dent in its income, and will continue incurring significant losses without donations.

Shortfalls have occurred because Rainbows was forced to close its five shops across the East Midlands, mass participation events have been cancelled and it is unable to hold any fundraising events. Schools, community groups and companies cannot carry out their regular fundraising and income from the Rainbows’ Lottery is also down. This year’s Spring Superdraw was cancelled for the first time in its history.

Although Rainbows is not at imminent risk of closure, the long term impact for the hospice, which supports over 450 families, is unknown.

Jane Burns, Director of Supporter Relations at Rainbows, added: “We would like to thank Wes for his very kind donation. The support we have had from the community since launching this appeal has been incredible.

“Times are difficult for everyone and it is wonderful to see so many kind-hearted messages and donations coming our way.”
