Normanton on Soar

- Ross Aston aston.ross@gmail.com

PICNIC IN THE PARK CANCELLATION. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, the annual Normanton on Soar Picnic in the Park (Saturday, August 8) is sadly cancelled this year.

However, we will celebrate even more so next year with a good get-together with music and food. We would like to say a massive ‘thankyou’ to all the villagers that continue to support this event.

NORMANTON ON SOAR MEN’S ASSOCIATION. At the time of writing, it is considered unlikely that the following will go ahead - the talk on South America on Monday 28th September, Nottingham ghost walk on Monday 26th October and skittles on Wednesday 25th November.

We are hopeful that circumstances might change so that guidelines will allow us to hold these meetings. If they are reinstated, we will publicise the changes as widely as possible.

WI. We have not been able to hold any meetings since March but members have been kept up to date with what is happening via emails from the committee.

We have been enjoying successful zoom quizzes and another will be organised for September.

Our first meeting at the hall in October is currently being planned and will use all guidelines and self-distancing measures. Let’s hope we all keep well and meet up in October.

ST JAMES’ CHURCHYARD WILDFLOWERS. For a while, the Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St. James’ Church has been thinking about ways in which we can help in the global sustainability drive as supported by the Church of England.

We have always had a lot of positive comments about how Sarah keeps the churchyard and now, with her help, we are initiating small changes to the way in which the space is maintained.

Alongside our existing natural habitat to the north of the building, we are allowing some areas of the churchyard to grow unmown from April to September. This way, the wild plants in these patches can flower, offering the greatest food and habitat resource to the greatest number of flora and fauna.

A variety of bees have been seen bumbling and foraging in the circles of white clover, self-heal, ox-eye daisies, bright blue speedwell and many other low growing native plants. Please visit the church to see our display on what wildflowers that can already be found in the area.

NORMANTON ON SOAR COMMUNITY SHOP - The Normanton on Soar Community Shop is now open part time initially on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings only from 10am to 1pm.

This will be reviewed weekly but we are ruled by Covid-19 regulations and the availability of volunteers.

We welcome more volunteers and would appreciate any help that can be offered to keep the shop open to help our community. Any queries please contact Brian on 07785 926883
