Mayor’s call to still honour the fallen but from home

-

THE mayor of Charnwood has encouraged residents to find ways to honour those who gave their lives during the world wars, amid the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

Councillor David Snartt said in a message that it was a “great personal honour” to take part in this year’s service in Loughborough in his role as mayor, having previously attended services at Anstey and Welbeck.

He urged people to observe the two-minute silence from their own homes and gardens while following social distancing measures.

Coun Snartt said: “As a member of the Royal British Legion and a past serving member of the Royal Air Force, I am particularly keen to make sure we can honour all past, present serving members and their families within our armed services community, especially the ones who have been involved in many conflicts around the world, making sure we have made a safer place for our children and future generations.

“During my year as the mayor of Charnwood, I was involved in remembering the 75 th anniversary of VJ Day, which marked victory over Japan and the end of the Second World War.

“It is at times like these that it is important to recognise the enormous debt we owe to our brave service personnel and the sacrifices they made on our behalf.

“We need to continue to remember this on this special day each year in November.”

He also said that this will be a challenging times for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, and he encouraged residents to find ways to support the charity drive, by donating online or doing their own fundraising.

Cllr Snart said: “I do hope you will all be able to take part in some way and observe the two-minute silence at 11am on Sunday 8th November.” Find out more on the Royal British Legion website.
