Borough tops list for new cases with 1,362 infections
Worst in county in past fortnight
MORE than 3,700 coronavirus cases were confirmed in the county, according to the latest fortnightly update by Leicestershire County Council.
Charnwood sits on the top of the list of districts across the county and accounts for more than a third of all the cases added to local tolls in the fortnight between October 25 and November 7. The figures, broken down by district are:
Charnwood: 1,362
Blaby: 594
North West Leicestershire: 516
Hinckley and Bosworth: 504
Oadby and Wigston: 405
Harborough: 360
Melton: 229
The county’s seven-day infection rate now stands at 290 cases per 100,000 people – which is its highest ever level.
The England average is now 243.3 per 100,000.
Charnwood, Blaby and Oadby and Wigston fall into the “significantly higher” than national average bracket, but the other four county districts and boroughs are currently not a cause for concern.
Leicestershire’s director of public health, Mike Sandys, told councillors that rates in the 17 to 21 age group are gradually falling, but the number of people aged over 60 testing positive is on the increase.
He said: “We do need to get ourselves down to the lowest levels we can throughout Leicestershire in advance of December 2, so we can come out in the lowest tier possible.
“But I suspect that case rates won’t go down for a little while yet just because of the way numbers have bubbled up over the last week and even more importantly in all of this, because of the time lag, we are likely to see hospital admissions and unfortunately deaths rise in the immediate future.”
Rates in all but one district across the county are now above 200, according to the data:
Harborough: 198.3 cases per 100,000 people
Hinckley and Bosworth: 209.5 cases per 100,000 people
Melton: 250 cases per 100,000 people
North West Leicestershire: 263.5 cases per 100,000 people
Blaby: 294.5 cases per 100,000 people
Oadby and Wigston: 319.2 cases per 100,000 people
Charnwood: 356.7 cases per 100,000 people
The 15 areas where the most cases have been diagnosed lately have also been revealed.
Data shows areas within Charnwood, Oadby and Wigston and Blaby feature prominently on the list.
