Exams failure meant I hit rock bottom, but believe in yourself and life can be... BEAUTIFUL

A STUDENT at Loughborough University is hoping to inspire people across the globe to realise their potential as she takes part in a national beauty pageant.

Tanya Sharma, 19, is taking part in Miss England to promote her new initiative, the Mobilise Movement, which she set up after coming back from her personal “rock bottom” to start looking at ways to make a difference in her community.

She has several projects in the pipeline, including working with the catering team on campus to reduce food waste.

She also volunteers at the students’ union as the vice chair of Enterprise in the Women’s Network, recently creating a Black Business Showcase and distributing female sanitary packages to the domestic violence shelter in the town.

Ms Sharma said: “I want to mobilise the lives of as many people as I can, via The Mobilise Movement, and Miss England offers the breadth of outreach to do this.

“It brings the opportunity to interact, connect and collaborate with a multitude of people across our industries and national community.

“With this also comes the potential to progress on to Miss World, and globalise the impact on mobilising lives.

“I believe social progression starts with the individual, and the more lives we can mobilise, the more we’ll grow as a collective, and that is when real progress is made.”

Her work towards the movement is focusing at present on the areas where she believes that there are the biggest barriers to mobilising in the age of coronavirus: mental health, poverty and diversity.

In 2020, she hit her lowest point after failing her first year exams, shattering her self-belief and leaving her feeling numb and passive in life.

She is now retaking her first year, studying information management and business.

The campaigner said in her introduction video for Miss England:

“There is something in all of our lives that prevents us from making progress, from being the best we can be. Often, it’s finances, but it can also be the more subtle factors, such as state of mind and self belief. What is it for you?

“Lockdown was difficult for us all; I myself, in my short life of 19 years, hit rock bottom. My greatest lesson?

You can lose it all, but one thing you must never lose, is your belief in your ability to persevere, progress and perform.”

You can lose it all, but one thing you must never lose, is your belief in your ability to persevere, progress and perform.
